The Best Style for the Job

Since we have 3 basic, but different styles of blades, questions come up as to which one is best for specific uses.

Since each style is designed for a different application, we want to sell you the right tool for the job. The following are brief explanations of each of the 3 styles.

Extended - ( BE & BEL ):
The extended style is a general purpose tool which can be used to dress tips, either on-line or off. It should be your first choice any time tips are dressed away from the welder.

It offers 2 basic advantages

  • The extended chucks provide more support & strength.
  • The slots on the sides of the chuck aid in chip relief.

The extended series is also popular for dressing tips while on the machine. All the extended style series snaps right into all the current dressing tools that we offer. A minimum of 1-1/2" clearance between welding faces of the tips is needed to dress on the welder.

We provide the same shapes in our BE series, as in our BF series. As an example, if you need a BF-18 shape but want a BE style, we will provide it for you. Also for the larger style BEL (#6 & #7 RWMA tips), we can provide many additional shapes, not shown in our catalog. We also sell the larger style BEL blades for #4 & #5 RWMA tips. These styles are used where there are a lot of cuts are being made - or more "beef" is needed.

We can dress the pointed ("A") tips with the extended series by using an extended guide ring.

Flush - ( BF ):
The flush style blade is designed specifically for dressing tips on the welder, with one of our pneumatic air tools. The minimum clearance required between the welding faces of the tips is 3/4". As the name implies, the flush series fits flush in the air tool, allowing you access in close quarters.

When tips are dressed out of the welder - in a lathe or drill press - the flush series can be used with our Adapter #AD-01.

This method should only be used for occasional dressing. We do not recommend using the BF series for off-line dressing, but you should use the extended type instead .

Tapered - ( BT ):
The tapered series is for on-line dressing of pointed tips when clearance is a problem. The chuck is used to guide the sides of the tip, centering the cut. Care must be used when locking the blade to insure proper blade height.

Adapter #AD-01 will allow the BT blades to be used in a lathe or drill press, but as with the BF series, we do not recommend it for extensive use.

A Note on Flaring:
We make our blades to conform with the welding faces shown in our catalog. On some blades we make the sides oversized to allow for mushroomed tips. On some blades we "flare" the top portion of the sides. This technique is used on blades which will dress tips that have long, pointed sides. This flared area cuts the wider portion back on worn tips, and allows the welding face area to be dressed.

An example of this type of flared blade would be, a BE-11.
